Objectives and ambition

Engagement with the art and music can have a range of positive effects on physical and mental health.

However, access to the many benefits of musical experience can be limited due to various reasons:

  1. The geographic location of the venue
  2. Personal limitations in access
  3. Limitation on the schedule of the concerts and performances
  4. Cost of the experience

Due to these limitations the effort and cost of getting access to the concerts and performances override additional value the participant would get from the experiences. In XTREME project, we remove these limitations by developing a human-centered mixed reality (MR) solution that, instead of requiring the participant to be physically present in the venue, brings the concerts and performances to a remote location via MR technology while retaining the immersive experience, and even giving additional dimensions to it by integrating real and virtual contents. Our solution also allows for virtually shared, realistic experience together with selected social circles of the user.

The name

XTREME stands for “Mixed Reality Environment for Immersive Experience of Art and Culture”.
XTREME is an EU funded, Horizon Europe project that started in January 2024.

Project kickoff

On the 11-12th January 2024, IT University in Copenhagen, the XTREME project coordinator, welcomed more than 40 participants from 14 different partner organizations from all over Europe.

XTREME is an 8.0 million-euro Horizon Europe project focused on developing mixed reality technology for the arts and culture industry.

The end goal of the project is to utilize cutting-edge mixed reality (MR) technology to transport concerts and performing art events into users’ homes or any desired environment.

Participants will enjoy a fully immersive experience with 3D visuals and spatial sound seamlessly blended into their surroundings creating immersion and a sense of presence as if they were in the concert hall, museum, or theater.

Artistic partners are, among others, MUNCH in Oslo (Munchmuseet), as well as the Finnish National Opera and Ballet in Helsinki.

During the 2 days we got a chance to get to know each other, plan the project activities, as well as spend time together in more informal settings.

The meeting was organized by Sami Brandt XTREME Project Coordinator and Justyna Starostka, XTREME Project manager, with big help from other ITU colleagues: Lisbeth Breinholt, Melanie Büscher, Louise Mørch Mortensen, and Stella Graßhof.

The project consortium

The project is in close collaboration with 14 different partners and together we will explore different alternatives to the traditional way of accessing music and art experiences.
